Pharmacodynamic Modeling
Link exposure to effect—inform dosing, refine endpoints, and guide smarter trial designs with pharmacodynamic modeling.
What is Pharmacodynamic (PD) Modeling?
Pharmacodynamic (PD) modeling describes how a drug’s concentration relates to its biological effect. It goes beyond “if a drug works” to explain how much, how fast, and for how long it works. By integrating pharmacokinetic (PK) data with observed responses, PD models quantify drug–effect relationships, enabling data-driven decisions on dosing, endpoints, and trial design.
PD models can take many forms, from simple effect-versus-concentration curves to complex mechanism-based approaches that incorporate disease biology and patient variability. The right model can reveal whether a drug’s effects are driven by peak concentration, total exposure, or sustained levels—and can anticipate how changes in dose or schedule might alter efficacy and safety.
Why Pharmacodynamics Matters in Drug Development
PD modeling plays a central role in model-informed drug development (MIDD) by providing a scientific basis for critical decisions. When used early and throughout the development process, PD modeling can:
